Case Study

Problem: A young mother with her four month old daughter called into the chemist. The child cried most of the night with infantile colic, unresponsive to conventional propietary colic mixtures. A clinic sister had suggested options which had limited success, with Angela still have reflux  & infantile vomiting. Both mother & daughter looked sleep deprived. Her parents had consulted their doctor who recommended  the baby be given compounded Omeprazole Suspension.

Treatment: The prescription only Omeprazole Suspension was prepared with a bitterness masking agent to ensure acceptance. The pH was adjusted to maximise stability & a banana flavour was added for compliance.

Result: From the first dose the child’s colic settled down. The child sleeps 5 hours at a time allowing the parents to get some well needed rest. As this product has a shelf life of only  1 month in the refrigerator, the mother returns regularly for a repeat prescription, keeping us informed of her child’s progress.
